Reveal Smoother, Brighter Skin with the Smart TCA Peel
Performed by Dr. Michele M. Thompson, board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist.
What Is the Smart TCA Peel
A Self Neutralizing combination of 15% Trichloroacetic Acid and 3% Glycolic Acid
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel is a well-established chemical peeling procedure used for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation. TCA induces controlled injury to the epidermis and, depending on concentration, the superficial dermis. This stimulates a controlled wound healing response, leading to exfoliation, regeneration of new epidermal and dermal tissue, and remodeling of collagen and elastin fibers.
The main benefits of TCA peel include improvement of photoaging, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity, appearance of enlarged pores, and vertical lip lines. The Smart TCA peel resurfaces and rejuvenates the skin; improving the overall skin texture by brightening the often dull and coarse quality associated with photoaging.
In independent clinical trials, after three Smart TCA peels, subjects demonstrated significant improvement including an overall appearance score improvement of 20%. The study also showed improvement in the appearance of hyperpigmentation (19%), fine lines (31%), wrinkles (10%), tactile smoothness (28%), skin laxity (18%), appearance of pores (21%), vertical lip lines (37%).
Histologically, TCA peels increase type I and III collagen deposition and normalize elastic tissue, resulting in improved skin tightness and reduced laxity. The procedure also redistributes melanin, leading to more even pigmentation, and can inhibit enzymes responsible for collagen and elastin degradation. The healing process involves transient inflammation, melanin redistribution, and collagen remodeling, typically completing within 4-6 days for this TCA peel.

The Process
Steps to Your Smart TCA Peel
Pre-treatment Preparation
All make up removed, face washed with a gentle cleanser, degreased with alcohol wipes. If there is a history of oral herpes simplex virus (cold sores), prophylactic Valtrex.
The Actual Procedure
Three (3) applications of the peel are applied over 11 minutes. The peel will feel "stingly" and prickly for approximately 5 minutes starting around 3 minutes and will start decreasing by the end of the 11 minutes. A fan is available to decrease symptoms. At the end of 11 minutes a regenerative mask is applied which cools and calms the skin and is left on for 10 minutes.
Post-treatment Care & Recovery
The peel and regenerative mask is removed with a soft gauze, an emollient is applied and then sunscreen is applied.
Number of Sessions Required & Maintenance
Best results are seen after 3 treatments timed one month apart. A yearly peel will keep the benefit as maintenance.
